Processional melodies in the Old Hispanic rite

ABSTRACT Old Hispanic liturgy was practised across much of medieval Iberia until c. 1080. In this article we analyse the extant processional antiphons, focusing on: presence or absence verses; amount text and relationship with Bible; cadence placement; number notes per chant (melodic density) syllable; melodic repetition within between chants. We demonstrate that antiphons are neither a homogenous corpus nor clearly differentiated stylistically from other antiphons. short case study Good Friday Veneration Cross, situate their wider ritual context, including likely staging in ecclesiastical architecture. As show, interaction melody directed antiphon texts towards particular devotional end.
